Concrete Volume Basics for Home Projects

Learn slab math, waste factors, and ordering tips before your next pour.

Start with the right shape

Most home projects are rectangular slabs: patio, shed pad, or sidewalk. Volume is length × width × thickness. Keep units consistent, or use a calculator that converts inches and feet for you.

Always add a waste factor

Uneven subgrades, pump lines, and spillage eat concrete. A 5–10% safety buffer is standard. Coming up short mid-pour usually costs more than ordering a little extra.

Bags vs ready-mix

Small patches and post holes are fine with bags. Once you approach a cubic yard or more, ready-mix is usually easier and more consistent. Use the Calnovix Concrete Calculator to compare yardage and bag counts side by side.
