What is a BMI Calculator?

The Calnovix BMI Calculator helps you estimate body mass index quickly using standard adult formulas. Enter height and weight, choose metric or imperial units, and get an instant BMI value with a clear weight category.

Formula

BMI is calculated as weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared. Imperial values are converted to kilograms and centimeters first, then to meters, so the same WHO category thresholds apply for both unit systems. Category cut-offs follow the World Health Organization adult BMI classification (see Sources below).

How it works

  1. Choose Metric (kg/cm) or Imperial (lb/ft + in).
  2. Enter your current weight.
  3. Enter your height.
  4. Review your BMI and category in the results panel.
  5. Compare your result with the standard adult ranges shown below the score.

Worked examples

  • Average adult (metric)

A person who weighs 70 kg and is 170 cm tall.

    BMI ≈ 24.2 → Normal

  • Imperial example

Someone who weighs 180 lb and is 5 ft 10 in tall.

    BMI ≈ 25.8 → Overweight

Professional tips

  • Measure height without shoes and weigh yourself at a consistent time of day.
  • BMI is a screening tool — talk with a clinician for personalized advice.
  • Track trends over time rather than focusing on a single reading.

Frequently asked questions

What is BMI?

Body mass index (BMI) is a simple ratio of weight to height squared. It is commonly used as a screening tool for underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity in adults.

How do you calculate BMI?

BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in meters)². This calculator converts imperial inputs for you and rounds the result to one decimal place.

What is a healthy BMI range?

For most adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal. Under 18.5 is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or higher is obese.

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

BMI does not measure body fat directly. Athletes, older adults, and some ethnic groups may fall outside typical ranges for their health status. Use BMI as a starting point, not a diagnosis.

Can I use pounds and feet?

Yes. Switch the unit system to Imperial, then enter weight in pounds and height in feet and inches.
